The Northern Chamber Orchestra kick off their second season at The Stoller Hall with a concert of undeniable masterworks featuring one of the piano world’s greatest stars, the phenomenally gifted Freddy Kempf. The programme opens with a piece Mendelssohn wrote after a memorable trip to the Scottish island of Staffa, perfectly capturing the drama and scale of the sea. The programme continues with Beethoven’s great C minor Piano Concerto, a work written when he was coming to terms with ill health and impending deafness.
The second half sees the NCO take on one of the mightiest works in the repertoire, the ‘Eroica’ Symphony. The audience may find insight in hearing this monumental piece played by a chamber orchestra, its colours and textures more defined than in a performance by a modern symphony orchestra. Despite Beethoven’s emotional struggles around the time of the symphony’s composition, it is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the great man.
