This year we are celebrating the 70th birthday of our Head of Composition, Dr Jeremy Pike, who has been a member of staff at Chetham’s since 1989. Join us for dynamic solo performances by our talented pianists showcasing six decades of diverse and evocative keyboard compositions. Members of the Chetham’s piano department will be marking this special year by giving performances of music he has written over the last sixty years – between the time he was 10 years old and the present day. Following morning recitals given by our younger pupils, the 5.30 and 7.30 concerts will feature performances by our advanced students as well as by members of staff. The programme will comprise around thirty short character pieces as well as several of his piano sonatas, including the dramatic sonata for piano and tape. Jeremy Pike is known for the powerful, expressive qualities of his music and a belief that music should be always be accessible to audiences of all ages whilst also being stimulating and thought-provoking.

For further information please visit his publisher’s website.

“Jeremy Pike is a composer who writes with consummate understanding about the piano. His music is immediate, accessible, vibrant and inspirational. It covers an enormous range of moods but is always strongly characterised. The Pike oeuvre ranges from pieces written whilst he was at primary school up to the present day. There is something for everyone there, whether they be elementary, intermediate, advanced or concert standard players. It is a great privilege to have Jeremy as a colleague at Chetham’s and a fantastic opportunity for our young pianists to work on his music directly under his guidance.” – Murray McLachlan
