5pm – Welcome and opening recital with Leon McCawley 

‘Light of touch, stylistically assured and brimful of intelligence and wit’ – Gramophone 

One of Britain’s foremost pianists, Leon McCawley has forged a highly successful career since winning first prize in the 1993 International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna and second prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition the same year. Since then, his concert performances and extensive discography have established him as a pianist of great integrity and variety, bringing freshness and vitality to Classical, Romantic and 20th century repertoire.

7.30pm – Gala Faculty Recital 

A wonderful opportunity to hear from some of the outstanding pianists who are teaching on the course this year, including performances by Peter Frankl, Julian Jacobson, Murray McLachlan, Kathryn Page, Nicholas Oliver and Lulu Yang.


Founded in 2001, the Chetham’s Piano Summer School is now firmly established as one of the most vibrant, respected and universally friendly events of its kind in the world. Participants enrol from all five continents and are inspired, guided and educated by an extraordinary faculty of over 60 internationally celebrated performer-teachers. This year promises to be no different and to enable access for audiences around the world, all major concerts will be available to watch online.
