Vonnegut Collective ‘The Moon Smells Like Gunpowder’

Manchester’s Vonnegut Collective treat us to an era-spanning double feature for NQ Jazz’s series of ‘seminal sci-fi’ film nights at The Yard. Group members Gemma Bass (violin), Gary Farr (trumpet), Norman Skipp (electronics), and Harry Percy (percussion), will improvise a live score to director/producer Mark Solter’s mysterious short ‘The Moon Smells Like Gunpowder’ (2019), before tackling ‘The Lost World’, a mid-twenties film adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1912 novel.

‘The Moon Smells Like Gunpowder’ follows a surveillance specialist on his final assignment, who finds his personal and professional worlds on an unstoppable collision course. The 28-minute short has won numerous film festival awards, including ‘Best Mystery Film’ at the 2019 Olympus Film Festival, and ‘Best Indie Film’ at the 2019 Los Angeles Film Awards.

‘The Lost World’ is a silent-era fantasy/adventure film, in which explorers on an expedition in South America are confronted by prehistoric beasts. The film is amongst many selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, having been deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”.
