Twenty years after leaving Manchester and Chetham’s School of Music, internationally acclaimed pianist Cordelia Williams returns to the city for a three-day residency at Stoller Hall, combining solo performance, chamber music and masterclasses. She brings with her a ‘supergroup’ of some of the country’s most exciting performers.
In the years since leaving Chetham’s, Cordelia has become recognised for her affinity with the music of Franz Schubert; as such, the weekend features his late, great A major Piano Sonata (D959) and some of his best-loved chamber music. Her solo recital delves into the timeless folk qualities of Schubert’s Sonata, pairing it with Chopin’s Mazurka and Janacek’s searing In the Mists. We also have the chance to hear her play Beethoven’s late Bagatelles op. 126, her recording of which was lauded by critics.
“This is playing that plumbs the essence of Beethoven’s expressive genius. An unerring sense of colour and proportion… richly imaginative, deeply communicative. Don’t miss it.” – International Piano
She is joined on Sunday lunchtime by her regular duo partner Tamsin Waley-Cohen for the shimmering Fantasy in C, alongside the celebration and sunlight of Bach’s G major Duo Sonata. That evening, she performs with fellow Chetham’s alumnus Guy Johnston in Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata, and then with the full group in the composer’s famous ‘Trout’ quintet, brimming with joy, spontaneity and humour.
