Twenty years after leaving Manchester and Chetham’s School of Music, internationally acclaimed pianist Cordelia Williams returns to the city for a three-day residency at Stoller Hall including a solo recital.

Cordelia Williams is recognised for the poetry and conviction of her playing and the depth of her interpretations. Performances include concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra (in Mexico City), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Her 2021 album Nightlight was awarded Critics’ Choice by International Piano and Recording of the Year by MusicWeb International. 2023’s Cascade is her fifth album: “A profound aesthetic understanding conveyed through an interpretative technique of the highest order, which are rarely encountered these days.” (Musical Opinion). The coming year will see further recordings of Schubert and Beethoven, as well as the complete Bach Duo Sonatas with Tamsin Waley-Cohen. In 2021 Cordelia spent time performing, teaching and filming in Kenya and the resulting documentary-film On Being a Pianist in Kenya explores the challenges facing young aspiring classical musicians in Nairobi. Her first book, The Happy Music Play Book, was written for parents of young children who wish to incorporate light-hearted music-making into everyday family life.
Cordelia’s solo recital delves into the timeless folk qualities of Schubert’s Sonata, pairing it with Chopin’s Mazurka and Janacek’s searing In the Mists. We also have the chance to hear her play Beethoven’s late Bagatelles op. 126, her recording of which was lauded by critics.
