To celebrate the end of our first year of school’s tours, Chetham’s Library is welcoming teachers to a free summer twilight tour and talk. Find out more about our curriculum-enhancing workshops and experiences for your students and help us shape the future of this programme.
This event is ideal for English and History specialists, school librarians and anyone seeking new cultural learning experiences for their young people.
The evening will include a tour of Chetham’s Library, introduction to our school’s workshops and access to supporting historic books and resources.
We currently deliver the following workshops and tours for schools:
English Language KS3/4
We have several significant historic texts in the Library that feature milestones in the development of the English Language, including works by Shakespeare and Chaucer. Students can also explore Chetham’s Library’s extensive collection of local poetry in Lancashire and Northern dialect, including creative activity for students to write poetry in their own words. Approach is adapted to the level of study.
Through workshop activities students explore:
• How the written word relates to the spoken word (phonetics)
• The readability and design of the texts (graphology)
• Vocabulary and audience
• Development of grammar
• The purpose of the text
• Style and forms within the texts
History KS3/4
Choose to explore one of the following themes which showcases items from our collection that give context to life in Manchester through the ages.
• Power and the People
• Reformation to Dissenting Religion in Manchester
• English Civil War
• Reign of Oliver Cromwell and understanding power and influence
• Health and the People
• Superstition, Herbalism and Apothecaries
• Early medical practice
• Public Health in Manchester
History KS5

It is possible to request specific items that support Historical Investigation topics (for AQA and Edexcel). The day also features a Q&A with members of the Chetham’s Library team to share more about careers and training in Libraries and Heritage.
