William Hogarth’s ‘A Harlot’s Progress’, an illustrated talk by Dr Noelle Dückmann-Gallagher, University of Manchester.
William Hogarth’s paintings and prints are for many the very image of the eighteenth century in England. His ‘Gin Lane’ and the parallel, ‘Beer Street’, are worthy of the over-used adjective ‘iconic’ when it comes to imagining the London of the 1700s. Using images from Chetham’s own extensive collection of Hogarth prints, expert Dr Noelle Dückmann Gallagher will take us through his earliest ‘hit’ series of prints, the ‘Harlot’s Progress’. Drawing attention to the many visual references not immediately obvious to the modern eye, and the dark humour that pervades them, she will set them in the context of the often raw, rough and ready life of the capital under the Georges.
Come to follow the adventures of Moll Hackabout!
