Part of our Sounds of Nature programme

‘I have nothing but praise for James Lisney’s piano playing; he combines velvet touch and wide range of colour with complete understanding of phrasing and dynamic shading. This is someone who can really give the mechanical box of wires and wood a singing soul – The Telegraph

James Lisney enjoys a rich musical life, moving seamlessly from concerto and recital soloist to chamber musician, song accompanist and pianist director. Initiatives, such as his Schubertreise series at London’s South Bank Centre, his extensive Beethoven Project or the recording company Woodhouse Editions, provide a platform for his wide-ranging musical interests.

For his recital at The Stoller Hall James will perform a programme centred around the theme of climate and nature, including Debussy’s La cathédrale engloutie, a piece is based on an ancient Breton myth in which a cathedral, submerged underwater off the coast of the Island of Ys, rises up from the sea on clear mornings when the water is transparent. This is followed by Peter Grimes’ Fantasy for piano, reflecting on his conflict with the sea. Continuing the theme of sound and nature Scriabin’s piece was inspired by his contention that the constant accumulation of heat would lead the earth to its ultimate destruction. Lisney will finish his performance with Beethoven, an exhilarating example of positivity and possibility – a nod to impact music can have on the future of the climate emergency.
