Featuring: John Ellis – Piano / Matt Owens – Bass

Pianist John Ellis and bassist Matt Owens treat us to a French fantasy double feature for NQ Jazz’s series of ‘seminal sci-fi’ film nights at The Yard. The duo will improvise live scores to turn-of-the-century masterpiece ‘Le Voyage dans la Lune’, and mid-twenties sci-fi comedy, ‘Paris Qui Dort’.

‘Paris Qui Dort’, which translates as ‘Paris which sleeps’ but carries the English language title ‘The Crazy Ray’, tells the tale of an eccentric doctor who uses a magic ray to freeze members of the public in their tracks.

Georges Méliès’s ‘Le Voyage dans la Lune’ was released in 1902 and is thought to be one of the most influential pieces of early 20th century cinema. It depicts five astronomers who embark upon an expedition to the moon, and their interactions with the alien life they find there.

In partnership with NQ Jazz and The Yard. Made possible by Arts Council England’s Supporting Grassroots Live Music fund.
